Is anyone familiar with the Cambridge parking lots along Bishop Allen and Prospect that were free on nights and weekends? They are now posted as permit only 24/7. I'm just curious if the city has released any other information about why or when the decision was made. Google didn't really help. I don't really understand it because I think the lots made it a lot easier for people to visit businesses in the square because metered parking is so scarce.

Those lots are privately owned by the Central Plaza Realty Trust, not the city.

Are they also leaving the gates closed 24/7?

I don't know why they *had* allowed the public to park there nights and weekends, since most private lots don't. But it's really too bad if they're no longer allowing it. They never totally filled up, so there's no reason to restrict them.

The owners' insurance providers may have insisted on it in order to limit their liability.

Yeah, it looks like they're leaving the gates closed 24/7 as of yesterday. Too bad, these were great "secret" lots for evenings and weekends - but I agree, it was always a little weird that they ever allowed others in. Green Street Garage isn't too pricey, at least?

Green Street Garage is relatively cheap at $1.50/hour. For dinner and a show: 4 hours is approximately $6.00.

Interesting. So who gains permits to these lots? Do the owners of the lots own apartment buildings where residents can obtain a permit or is it for businesses?

I think Central Plaza is the large concrete office building at Mass Ave and Prospect.

Thanks for letting us know about this! I would have just driven down there at some point and probably been late to something!

It's been strange walking past these lots recently and seeing them entirely empty, except for one or two commercial vans in the back corner.

I'm going to try to find the contact information for the property owner.

Did you ever find contact information for the owner?
