Used car dealerships?
Can anyone recommend a reputable dealership in the area (MBTA accessible a big plus)? Or warn me away from a bad one? I'm looking for a place to buy a used foreign (Honda/Toyota/Nissan) car and other than bbb.org have trouble finding a source to say which listings on Autotrader are worth persuing. Thanks.

The fuel filter had fused onto the fuel line. The shop that did the 120k service broke the line to get the filter out. It annoyed the mechanic enough that he looked up the lot number on the filter and discovered it was original to the car. (I paid to have it changed at 30k and 60k as well, at Fairfax Toyota in Virginia.)
Find a mechanic you like, have them do a pre-purchase inspection and buy from Craigslist. A seller on Craigslist might try to cheat you and might be a professional swindler, but they might not and they might not be. Go to a dealership and they *will* try to cheat you and they *will* be pros.

they then claimed for nearly a week that my payment information was lost, and then within the next few months, i had to get a new battery, a completely new exhaust system, and the brakes rebuilt from axle out.

i'm not sure what your budget is, but depending what you're looking to spend and what year you want to buy, the best used car places i've found were west http://www.westroxburymotors.com/ on center st across from roache brothers, and http://www.cars.com/bostonmotorsports/
west roxbury has really clean cars that are reasonably priced.
allston's cars are sort of dirtier, but they are pretty cheap to begin with, but they are super easy to negotiate with and will knock a lot off the price.
and there's always http://www.cypressauto.com/ they're really nice guys, and they're right on the D line.
good luck!
