I got out of work tonight and was driving south through the Tip and I saw water on the road. A pretty decent amount, as a matter of fact. And then, since big heavy shit tends to fall out of the sky and kill people in these tunnels, I looked up and saw water dripping down from the ceiling. I would say it was like standing under an awning and seeing the water come off it during a moderately heavy rainstorm.
clarification- I understand that some leakage is normal in the tunnel and am used to seeing wet patches on the road, but water coming out of the ceiling- not normal at all.
So I drove like 3 bats outta hell before the thing split apart like a rotten banana and as soon as I got out of the tunnel, called the State Police. Got transfered to a dispatcher and when I told him, he seemed less than concerned. Just brushed me off with a disinterested-sounding "thanks" and hung up without asking me where the leak was. Oh, ok, am I to assume then that when I see water leaking into the tunnel 1/2 mile from the exit that this is a normal thing? For fuck's sake, at least tell me that even if it's a huge lie.
Ok, now some of you are no doubt thinking it rained tonight. But as of 11:30 it hadn't. Nope, it was still bone-dry out. So it wasn't rain water coming in.
Maybe I'm just being a bit touchy on the matter, but goddamn, I am not feeling the sort of safety and security I think I should be feeling in a $14 billion system. No sir, I am not feeling the Big Dig love one single bit. And you'd think the State Police might at least pretend to be concerned, just for the sake of calming a very jittery public.

State police not giving a shit about public safety?! *GASP!*

Re: State police not giving a shit about public safety?! *GASP!*
... wait a minute. The state police did not react to a report of water leaking in a tunnel most likely because it's entirely normal. Somehow in your mind this relates to a story about someone getting honked at for being broken down on a highway. It also relates to an off-duty Boston police officer getting into a car accident. And all of it summed up means that state police don't care about public safety?
You can't tell, but I'm making crazy eyes right now.

OK, follow closely here:
The OP expressed disbelief that the police did not respond to water leaking in a tunnel, which as you pointed out has a small chance of leading to a major fatality. I argued that the Staties' apathy was entirely believable, considering they don't even respond to incidents where there is a much greater potential for multiple fatalities - such as a stalled car in a high-speed travel lane. And I thought "crazy eyes" was your normal expression.

Re: OK, follow closely here:
Yes the state police didn't gl deal with a stalled car (not their job anyways as far as I know) because they were busy dealing with real crimes means they are apathetic. And where does the off-duty Boston police officer's accident come into play?August 25 2006, 15:36:22 UTC 5 years ago
Re: OK, follow closely here:
Actually, it is - when a car is interfering with the normal flow of traffic and can cause accidents (of which the Boston police officer hitting that car is called an "example"), the state police are supposed to come out and put down cones and flares to divert or alert oncoming traffic - you'll notice they do this when there is construction? And if you think a loooong minute, why is a speeding motorcycle a "real crime"? Presumably, because it can cause fatal accidents on the roadways - or at least that's what they say when they write you the $300 ticket.Further, when the above incident happened to me, I initially called the Boston police, who transferred me to the state police because... "I-93 is their responsibility."
