Sitting on the bus

Hello good people of Boston.

Could I get your opinion on those FUCKTARDS individuals who sit in the outside seat on the bus - especially the number 1. Like when there's two seats and they sit in the one closest to the aisle, leaving the inside - and completely inaccessible one - empty.

I'm sure they have some semi-acceptable logic in their head - "I was here first, so I should get my choice of seats," or "I'm only going one stop, and it'll be MUCH more work for me to go to the inside seat then get out again."

But it would seem to me that they are just being... well... rude.

Thoughts?

I am one of those fucktards. I hate when people sit next to me and with some subtle discouragement, I can have the seat free. If they really want it, they can ask for it. If not, it's not my problem.

just ask them to move so you can get into the seat they left open? It's not that hard.

I like to dive over them to get into the seat, preferably by crushing their toes.

i've never seen that before! i guess i would just go sit in the seat next to them.

hell, i'd be happy to find a seat lately, being 34 weeks pregnant :)

I'm 36 weeks. It never ceases to amaze me that people no longer bother to ask a visibly pregnant woman if she needs or would like to sit down.

It's not really a big deal, just ask, "hey, can i sit there?" and usually the problem is over.
Personally sometimes I do like to be against the wall of the bus, the outer seat allows you to sit more normally.

November 17 2005, 17:06:09 UTC 6 years ago

Oh I do ask, every time. I'm not saying it's a big deal, but I do think it's a bit rude.

I'm glad you crossed that word out. I'd hate to think you were genuinely angry to the point of swearing at the way someone sits on the bus.

November 17 2005, 17:02:14 UTC 6 years ago

I do that only when the bus is not full.

November 17 2005, 17:05:37 UTC 6 years ago

Holy passive aggresive.

A simple "excuse me" should either get them to slide over or allow you an excuse to step on their toes as you cross over them. :)

The only issue here is cross them crotchside or buttside.

I'm not saying I don't ask or do it, I'm just saying I think it's rude on their part.

don't even ask to sit there. just say 'excuse me' and stare at them till they either move over or move out of the way for you to get in.

i hate those people. and the people who don't get up to let pregnant, blind, or otherwise handicapped people sit in the frontmost seats. especially the chick who rides the #78 in the morning, yapping on her cellphone, smacking her cream-cheesy gums together and slurping her iced coffee. i want to punch her out.

And people wonder - do they? - why most would prefer being stuck in traffic in their own vehicles rather than take the T.

They're not being rude unless people have to stand because of it, IMO. I've never seen it be a problem.

I think it's rude. It drives me crazy when a bus is full and people take advantage of the fact that other people are reluctant to ask for an empty seat.

November 17 2005, 17:22:37 UTC 6 years ago

Well, clearly...

Buses are for poor people, and people people are dumb.

So it's not really that surprising ;)

I thought we saved this sort of stuff for Fridays?

Re: Well, clearly...

um, or for people who the T doesn't work for....it goes closer to my work, a direct route from my apartment actually than either the red or green line. i've seen more combo and zone passes on the bus than i can count so, you might want to reevaluate that statement.

November 17 2005, 17:23:55 UTC 6 years ago

It's rude. So's sitting on one seat and putting your bag on another.

[info]katespace

November 17 2005, 17:33:59 UTC 6 years ago

Or the guys who sit on the T with their legs spread so wide that they take up their seat, and the seats on either side of them. I always get the urge to inform them that their packages are probably not big enough to require sitting like that, but I'm afraid that someone, someday will decide that somehow that means I want to see their package, so I bite my tongue.

It's somewhat rude if the bus is full, since many people are too shy to ask to sit. But I don't think most people are doing it intentionally - it may be that they sat there when the bus was quite empty and then just never noticed that the bus began to fill up. I always move to the inner seat if I am sitting, personally.

When I do see someone on the outside seat, w/a bag etc I simply say "excuse me" and they move - never been a problem.

the only thing that really bugs me is the people who put their bags in a seat. i mean i do that if there are tons of empty seats, but a while back i was on the train and some obnoxious fuck would not remove her shopping bag from the seat next to her...and the train was PACKED. did her bag buy a token too?

When I lived in the city and took the bus regularly, I sat on the outside seat because:
1. I'm tall.
2. The window seats leak when it rains.
3. I got off at one of the first stops.

If someone really wants the inside seat, they can ask for it. I always gladly got up and let the person take the inside, and I never reserved it by putting my stuff on it. Seriously, how hard is it to ask?

[info]billetdoux

November 17 2005, 18:40:30 UTC 6 years ago

Harder than it is to avoid the whole thing by just sitting on the inside seat to begin with. That's what rudeness is - putting the onus on other people.

[info]fire_faery

November 17 2005, 21:13:37 UTC 6 years ago

This is just my opinion...

I just came from CA and just to let you know that it happens everywhere in our country in public transportation, just not in Boston, fyi. People are people and you just have to deal with it.

Plus, judging other people in Boston is just not right, imho.

This doesn't apply to the type of buses you are talking about....but...on buses that I have to be on for a long time, such as the greyhound, I get claustrophobic unless I'm in the aisle seat (same thing on airplanes). So I will seat in the outer seat in that type of a situation. However, if I see someone coming down the aisle looking for a seat, I will immediately offer them the inside seat/get up right away.

So maybe there are folks who are even more claustrophobic than me and that's why they sit in the outer seat? I agree that people who just don't want to sit next to anyone are selfish fucktards, but there must be a few claustrophobes out there too.

However, it's only acceptable if YOU offer to get up to people looking for seats.
