Suspicious packages part of Turner Broadcasting marketing campaign

By Mac Daniel and Andrew Ryan, Globe Staff

Turner Broadcasting acknowledged late this afternoon that the suspicious packages that ignited fears of bombs across Boston today were magnetic lights that were part of an outdoor marketing campaign for an adult cartoon.

Turner was promoting Adult Swim's animated television show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" in Boston and nine other cities, according to a statement e-mailed by Shirley Powell, a company spokeswoman.

"Parent company Turner Broadcasting is in contact with local and federal law enforcement on the exact locations of the billboards," the state an e-mail statement said. "We regret that they were mistakenly thought to pose any danger."

"Aqua Teen Hunger Force" airs late at night and includes animated characters that are depicted as fast food products, including a ball of ground meat, French fries, and a milkshake.

Turner Broadcasting did not provide a detailed description of the magnetic lights that had been placed on bridges and other infrastructure across the city. The statement said the objects had been in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Austin, San Francisco, and Philadelphia.

Eight of the electronic, flashing devices were mistaken for bombs today in Boston and another sparked fear in Somerville, according to Boston Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis. The objects were found on a girder under Interstate 93, on the Longfellow and BU bridges, in Allston, near the New England Medical Center, and in more crowded public places.

City and state officials tried to quell fears today at a press conference at about the time Turner Broadcasting took responsibility for the publicity stunt. Boston Mayor Thomas promised to prosecute those responsible for what was described at the time as a hoax.

"This is not playing around," said Menino, who added that each individual scare could be punishable by two to three years in prison.

Strange "devices" reported in Boston

Numerous "strange devices" were reported in Boston today, being discovered on street corners reaching as far out as Somerville and Brookline.

Initial reports of the devices indicate they contained LEDs and wires. Many of the devices made noise, and some even began counting down from 40.

"I thought we had a severe threat on my hands when it lit up, but when it started counting down, that's when I hit the panic button" said John Q. Moron of the State Department.

Boston police and bomb squad logged in over 4000 locations of the suspicious devices after the initial sighting earlier today. Early internet buzz claims these devices have appeared in other major cities as well, but without cause for alarm.

Our news station has obtained this preliminary camphone picture of the device:

News sites and law enforcement will continue to investigate and provide more details later.

BREAKING NEWS: Police tonight arrested an Arlington man for planting the devices that led to bomb scares across the Boston area. Also, Menino has come out with this statement:

“It is outrageous, in a post 9/11 world, that a company would use this type of marketing scheme. I am prepared to take any and all legal action against Turner Broadcasting and its affiliates for any and all expenses incurred during the response to today’s incidents. Boston will look to coordinate our efforts going forward with Cambridge, Somerville and any other affected agencies.

and funny, I'm reasonably sure you all didn't step forward to check whether any of the devices were real before you saw the pictures.

Breaking News (again) and Editorial [Jan. 31st, 2007|09:44 pm]
The Boston Community

BREAKING NEWS: Attorney General Martha Coakley said authorities have recovered 14 of 38 packages around Boston that prompted widespread panic and caused traffic shutdowns. Two of the objects were initially reported to police as suspected pipe bombs, said Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, but turned out to be a Turner Broadcasting stunt to promote a cartoon. "This is outrageous,'' Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said of the ploy. He said Turner Broadcasting knew the stunt was causing citywide panic at noon but waited hours to send a one-paragraph apology.  "It's all about corporate greed,'' Menino said, adding that responsibility extended beyond those who placed the installations. "The people in the boardroom have some obligation,'' Menino said tonight. An Arlington man has been arrested for placing the "hoax devices,'' Coakley said.

If that's true that they knew and waited to tell... that is really lame.

watching this go down in new hampshire has been hilarious.

however, i've been posed this question by a few people tonight, and it's one that deems answering by b0st0n ...

has this brought on the banning of all lite-brites in boston?
are lite-brites the next evils to be added to the already-too-long list of blue laws?
will there be burning of lite-brites in the streets?!
