Anyone else here a chronic insomniac? [Jun. 8th, 2004|12:25 am]

b0st0n

[youandwhosearmy]
Not so much an advertisment as an I'm bored request and would like to have a couple of new friends who stay up the hours I do. Must be in to coffee and smoking cigarettes.

Will pay for coffee.

Let me know folks, its hard to be an insomniac in this city.

K later.

Next month, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority will become the first transit agency in the nation to institute a permanent policy of randomly inspecting passenger bags and packages on subway and commuter trains, MBTA police officials disclosed yesterday.

From the Globe:
"Innovation city
Why good ideas are born in Boston -- but don't always stay
By Scott Kirsner | June 6, 2004
NO OTHER CITY in America can compare to Boston as a wellspring of innovation. For more than 300 years, people have come here to learn what has been done in their field so far, stake a claim to an acre of the as-yet-undone, and begin tilling the hard ground."

Followup on that protester from BC [Jun. 8th, 2004|09:21 am]

b0st0n

[srl]
Someone here posted awhile back about the BC student who stood outside the military recruiting office downtown, posing as one of the Iraqi prison-abuse photos. The Globe wrote about it today:

The Suffolk district attorney's office is "strongly considering" dropping charges against a Boston College junior arrested last month while protesting in front of a downtown military recruiting center by imitating one of the photos taken at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison.

On May 26, Joseph Previtera, Jr., 21, an international studies major, stood on a crate outside the Armed Forces Career Center on Tremont Street wearing a pointy, black hood and a gauzy, dark shawl. Mimicking the photograph, he dangled two wires from his outstretched fingers, as if he would be electrocuted.

Soon afterward, police arrested Previtera, and he was arraigned the next day in Boston Municipal Court on charges of disturbing the peace, making a false bomb threat, and possession of a hoax device.

Authorities are now saying they have yet to find evidence that Previtera was making a bomb threat.

I'm having lunch with a former professor today near Downtown Crossing (where I work). He's very cool, so I don't need to take him anywhere formal or uptight, but I'd like to take him somewhere sitdown at least. I've heard good things about Silvertone on Bromfield St. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks to the Jimmy Fund, there's a huge ice cream event going on at Government Center June 8-10. Seven dollars to get in, most of which goes to charity, and you get to eat all the ice cream you can. Here is the list of brands and their flavors.

Hi, I'm a college student transferring Suffolk in the Fall and I'm looking for someone around my age who'd be interested in living with me and looking for apartments for the year. I don't really have any location preferences as long as it's in Boston and not too far from Suffolk. I'm clean and I cook really well.

You can find more information about me and my interests here:

And you can contact me either using AIM ("shamus part deux) or by e-mail (shamus@njpunk.com).

I'd love to hear from someone totally awesome!

Used adult DVD buybacks? [Jun. 8th, 2004|03:04 pm]

b0st0n

[derspatchel]
All right. Who here knows of a store in the area, preferably T-accessible, that pays cash for used adult DVDs? I've inherited a collection that's of no use to me and, in the spirit of things, would like instant gratification for selling them. (This means I'd much prefer to avoid eBay or Craigslist -- I'd just like to make one trip, name one price, and get immediate funds.)

Plus it gives me some good material to keep in my backpack for when the MBTA guys decide to search me.
As always, thank you for your time and thank you -- for roiding the T.

civil liberties task force meeting tomorrow [Jun. 8th, 2004|03:45 pm]

b0st0n

[cos]
The Massachusetts Civil Liberties Task Force is having its monthly meeting tomorrow evening at the ACLU office in Boston. If you're worried or upset by recent encorachments on freedom such as random bag searches on the T or any of the personal stories in Mass Impact, and want to volunteer some time and be part of the response, please attend. Members of the CLTF are working on, among other things, a response to the MBTA situation, a state civil liberties resolution, a ballot initiative, protecting protesters' rights at the DNC, and also just sharing information.
    Civil Liberties Task Force meeting
    Wednesday, June 9th, 6:00pm
    Boston ACLU office
    99 Chauncy Street, 3rd floor
To get there by T (hah!), go to Downtown Crossing and take the Chauncy Street exit - the opposite end of the station from the Filene's Basement exit. When you emerge onto Chauncy Street, turn right, and walk a couple of blocks. You'll see "99" on a big marquis over the sidewalk, enter and take the elevator to the third floor.

Nose rings [Jun. 8th, 2004|06:33 pm]

b0st0n

[lilmsmouseyhead]
I looked at the memories, etc, etc.

Where would I go to buy a quality nose ring? Doesn't have to be a piercing place, just anywhere that might carry nose rings, really. I just noticed that the gem fell out of the one I was pierced with.... and I'm going to change it soon anyway.

Oh, and preferably someplace in Boston, not online, b\c I'm impatient and need instant gratification.

Thanks :-)

P.S. Who thinks the scooperbowl is a waste of money? I could just buy a $3 gallon of ice cream and not even be able to finish it all.

Show us your papers ...and handover your bag. [Jun. 8th, 2004|07:51 pm]

[devilishloompa]
So first it was IDs now they are going to be randomly searching bags on both the commuter rail and the T.

Where the hell are our rights? How does everyone feel about this?

I am personally disgusted, I do not think that they should be randomly searching bags and if it happened to me I would be bloody furious. But like the thing with the IDs if you don't let them search it off to 'the station' with you!

(sorry if this has been posted before I haven't looked)

Not that I agree AT ALL with this ID checking and bag searching business on the T...but...

How many of you "I'M NOT GOING TO LET THEM! FUCK THEM! I HAVE RIGHTS BLAH BLAH" people would actually say that shit in real life to a MBTA cop? Come on, be real here. Would you?

junking a car? [Jun. 8th, 2004|09:50 pm]

b0st0n

[cowgurrl]
anyone know of a place in the metroboston or southshore area where they will pay for a car for parts/scrap metal? i have a non-running (but most likely fixable) car that i'd like to try to get about $500 for somehow. charity donataion tax writeoff really wouldn't help me out too much atm, and i don't know if they'd take it anyway with it not running and all. any ideas (or buyers!) are greatly appreciated :)

*edit*
the car has been sitting in my yard for about 8 months now, and someone w/a 508 area code left several notes on the car that said "call me before you junk your car"- at the time we didn't think it would come to that, and now we can't find his #... any leads in THAT area also appreciated...

A few questions for those who support MBTA random bag checks. [Jun. 8th, 2004|10:15 pm]

b0st0n

[xiphias]
What does the Fourth Amendment apply to, if not this? Why does the Fourth Amendment not apply to this, and what would it apply to?

Or is the Bill of Rights a bad idea, and should it be abolished? Or can it be simply set aside when necessary, and, if so, how does one tell when it is or is not neccessary? What safeguards should be in place to prevent a fascist police state from forming?

Assuming that no system is perfect, and is going to have errors, which way is it better to skew the errors -- towards allowing crimes or towards allowing a fascist police state? Is terrorism qualitatively different from other crimes in this regard? If it is, why?

I wish this would settle things, but.. [Jun. 8th, 2004|10:59 pm]

[overstim]
The Fourth Amendment:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

"Unreasonable searches and seizures". Sounds to me like the MBTA has decided that searching bags on trains is not unreasonable, and its our job to contest that in court if we have a problem with it. So, for all you people that have been kvetching.... Have at it! Goodluck and godspeed!
